Tis the season to prepare

Photo above is my freshly made Perfect Rose soap that I have been packaging all week.

If you are a crafter you probably already understand from the title what this post is about.

Every year at this time I am busy, busy, busy preparing for the hectic holiday season ahead. I've never understood that whole Christmas in July sale stuff as I can barely prepare for the real Christmas in December. This time of year is the time in which I am making soap non-stop day and night. During August and September I practically package soap in my sleep so that my little golden boxed creations can make it to some one's stocking or under some one's Christmas tree this year. I've been doing this 12 years now and I still never feel prepared enough for the tidal wave of new fans that discover my creations every year from receiving them as gifts or by searching online for that special something to give to their loved ones.

Today I am making my Orange Vanilla soap and my whole house smells like creamsicles...Mmmmm another big part of why I love this time of year :-)

Due to all of the corporate greed and major financial mismanagement going on in this world there has been a movement to support handmade and the little guy like me. When grabbing those handmade holiday gifts this season remember all of us that prepared and worked all year long to bring these creations to you. We don't have big machinery, huge factories or 100's of employees, we bring you these creations from our hearts and our genuine desire to create them for you. As I sit here this morning tying bows on gifts to prepare, I have a smile on my face knowing some one is truly going to love receiving this as a gift this year. Some how from day to day that keeps me going.

The pure joy of creating and bringing something beautiful into the world with my own 2 hands for others gives me a satisfaction that is hard to put into words. I truly love what I do, but I couldn't love it without you and your support. A big thank you to all of you that support handmade and crafters this holiday season.

Hotel soap, guest soap, handmade soap and more!

Soap I got when staying at a hotel in Napoli (Naples, IT)

I've always loved those cute little soaps you get when you stay in a hotel or a bed and breakfast.  I even collect them as my souvenir when I travel.  I've been making my own handmade soap for 12 years now, but still love all other soaps and toiletries.  I have several other blogs featuring my soap and other peoples soap, for instance I have a Handmade Lavender Soap blog that shows off handmade lavender soap from all around the world.  I also have 2 similar ones dedicated to Coconut Milk Soap and Handmade Rose Soap.  If you stop by those blogs you will see some of the soaps I love.  Today I wanted to show you a little of my travel soap collection.

Here are some of the soaps I've collected over the years.

Soap from Hotel Alba in Firenze (Florence,IT)

One from Hotel Saint-Honore in Paris

This one is from Agli Artista Hotel in Venezia (Venice, IT)

and one of my favorite experiences the night train from Venezia (Venice, IT) to Amsterdam.  I love this little logo they have on the soap.

I have a whole collection from many different places throughout the USA, Europe and the Caribbean.  I hope to make it to Asia this year to start a collection from there.  I've always just thought they were so adorable and such a great souvenir since most of them have the Hotel address and phone number on them some where.  It's also a great thing to bring home to kids as the soaps seem so exotic when they are from a foreign land.  I love to use them to show kids about other languages and cultures.  Since they are small, they are an easy thing to bring back and they look like little chocolates to kids which intrigues them.  Just make sure that they aren't so young that they try to eat them ;-)

I'm curious what things my readers collect when traveling?  Would love to hear some of your stories.

    Big or small?

When I first began my business back in 1998 (which at that time was only handcrafted candles) I didn’t have a vision. I just knew that if I made candles and sold them I could pay my bills. So that is how I started. I didn’t have a business plan, I didn’t go to business school, all I did was make candles that people liked and as a result purchased them. Sounds pretty simple right?? WRONG!!

Here is a photo of some of the first candles I ever made

    first candles

As time went on I followed the typical American business mindset of “bigger is better” and “growth is good” what I didn’t realize at that time was that instead of controlling my business I was growing it to the point where it controlled me. I never asked myself the question “is this going to make me happy?” I was just so happy to be working for myself I didn’t think it would come to a point where I would be unhappy with it. I mean this is the “American Dream” right? Entrepreneurship and success?

Here is a photo of some of the first soaps I ever made

    first soaps

So when I had grown it to a point of having a store front, a 24 page full color catalog, tv commercials, being featured in broadway plays, a coffee shop, a website, 4 employees, 4 interns and 50 stores carrying my candles worldwide I thought gosh I have it made, but why am I not happy? This is what everyone works for right? To have their own business and be successful. Everyone was always telling me "WOW you’re lucky!” Yet as much as everyone kept saying that I didn’t feel it. People came into my store and constantly told me oh I know a store that will carry these or they would tell me they want to invest to turn it into something even bigger.

Here is a photo of part of my studio during that time

I thought all of this was the natural progression of business and that I should want all of this, but the reality was I had come to a point in which it was too much for me and I had no life outside of my business. I couldn’t keep a serious relationship, all of my friends had to visit me while I was working and half the time I’d put them to work while they were there because I was so tired and overworked. I realized this was no life for me. I did this to be free and now I felt more trapped than ever. Everything was happening so fast and I felt the business was making decisions for me, rather than me making decisions for it.

Here is a photo of the candles that made me famous shall we say ;-)

    soul searching candles

It was at the end of 2003 that everything changed for me. I became the victim of internet credit card fraud during the holiday season of 2003. At that time I lost everything I had and had to fight to make it survive another year. I closed my store and manufacturing at the end of 2004 and closed my business. My business was destroyed and I had to pick up the pieces and make sense of it now. I was devastated and went through some extremely hard times. To this day I am still repaying debt from this situation and working on resolving all of the tax issues it caused.

There is a bright side to this story though. Strangely I am happier than ever with my business as this catastrophe caused me to restructure my business in a way that was made for me. I am now a sole proprietor that works for myself, I mostly make soap as it is less labor intensive than candle making and I operate it as a small business with no intention of growing big. I’ve learned to say “no” to things I know down the road will not work with my life. My business and my life have to work together or it doesn’t work at all. I’ve learned that “bigger is not always better.” I am posting this today for those who are starting their own small business or turning a craft into business. I’d like to offer some advice that I feel is essential to the success of all small business owners.

My advice: “listen to your inner voice, take a step away from your business on a daily basis and ask yourself what best suites your life with your business being a part of it? They have to work together, make decisions everyday based on what you want your life to be, not on what you want the business to be as the business will naturally become what you want it to if you put yourself first.”

Here is a photo of some of my current soaps

    bulk soap photos 012

I hope sharing this story helps those just starting out or those trying to make big decisions now or maybe you are where I was at some point in this story and it triggers you to make the right decision now. I wish everyone at any stage of becoming an entrepreneur or small business owner much success and happiness in your life and business.

    Ahhhh the candles I promised

So like I said it's been a while since I've made candles, but at the same time it's like riding a bike.

I really enjoyed coming back to my old craft after a year and a half break from it. Stepping away from doing soap for a few days is doing me some good.

I'm rejuvenating my creative juices, there are certain colors you can get in candle making that are impossible to achieve in soap making and vice versa. These are some of my favorite colors at the moment, but that changes from week to week ;-)

I really enjoy working with different arts and crafts, it seems to give me ideas and new energy. I tend to always come back to what fulfills me most and that is the soap making. I thought it would be fun to share my candles with those of you who have never seen any of them. I hope you've enjoyed my break away from soap with this candle making day. Back to soap tomorrow Yay!!

    DON'T FORGET*****
Keep sharing your favorite scents by filling out the poll at the top right of this blog. I'll be scheduling a soap giveaway later this week and the poll will help me choose which soap to give away :)
